The Houston Abolitionist Collective just dropped a The Houston Abolitionist Collective just dropped a powerful new zine on re-imagining the way we address harm and care for our communities. In other words: why we need abolition, and why we need it urgently. Gather your homies around the (virtual) campfire for “Imagine a Houston That Keeps George Floyd at Home, Alive, and Safe” - or join HAC's live reading this Saturday at 4 PM CT.

Visit HAC's website www.LiberateHTX.com (link in bio) to read the full Zine, register for Saturday's event, or join HAC.
Myrtala Trystan, climate activist and Harvey survi Myrtala Trystan, climate activist and Harvey survivor, has a message for Mayor Turner: Climate action is about the survival of communities like hers. So why are oil companies like BP and Shell leading Houston's climate and disaster resilience efforts, while frontline communities w/o millions of dollars to buy Turner's ear are left out to dry? Link in bio to read Myrtala's op-ed in the Houston Chronicle.

We're happy to see so many of our west street family featured in media lately. Much of our work at West Street is about bringing voices from the edge to the center, based on the conviction that those on the frontlines of (both everyday and "500-year") disasters are best positioned to identify the dramatic changes needed for a truly just recovery.
This week Ms. Sandra Edwards was featured on ABC13 This week Ms. Sandra Edwards was featured on ABC13 News' coverage of the deadly cancer cluster that has been killing children and families in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens for decades. Entire families are dying to cancer from exposure to creosote, a carcinogenic toxin, from the nearby Union Pacific rail yard. Union Pacific denies responsibility and has given little more than "thoughts and prayers" to residents. For years residents have fought for action from the company, city, and regulatory agencies. “We have to be the voice for the people who are not here,” resident Verna Harrison said, “because they’re gone, and there’s a whole lot of them gone.”
Tomorrow night, watch the amazing Doris Brown (WSR Tomorrow night, watch the amazing Doris Brown (WSR staffer, NAC cofounder) and Alice Torres (Harvey Forgotten Survivor Caucus cofounder) featured in the Houston documentary Again, Together.

The film screening will be followed by a panel on environmental racism in Houston. 7-8 pm Thursday, don't miss it! Link to register in bio.

There are still many homes that are dealing with t There are still many homes that are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Harvey is a 10 year storm, and we are not even at 3½ years. Here we are meeting outside of our new full rebuild project for Q1 of 2021. Its exciting to be bringing on new members to help lead the rebuild, and we will not just be hiring local residents for help, but also training multiple residents to be trained on some specialized construction tasks. Rebuilding the community together with the community. That is part of an equitable and just recovery.
We were able to hire the Branches for some rebuild We were able to hire the Branches for some rebuild work and get a new oven delivered and installed at their house just in time for holiday cooking. Empowering the community through inclusion and support. Cant wait to work with them in the beginning of 2021

I hope Mrs. Branch shares some amazing food with us.

The Harvey Frgotten Survivors Caucus got some roug The Harvey Frgotten Survivors Caucus got some rough news last week, but we are taking action!

After years of waiting for help from the City’s HoAP, meeting with City and State officials, hosting actions, and testifying at city council, Caucus members are being told by City staff that the City is ending the program and that they must now work with the General Land Office of Texas’ home repair program. As a caucus, we have been told repeatedly that it is in their best interest to stay with the City’s program, even though the Caucus has been asking about the possible termination of the City program. That was bad and possibly dishonest advice. But, the City and GLO can still take actions to reduce the pain and confusion this has caused.

Check out our demand to resolve this injustice above.

The West Street Recovery team is supporting @houstoninaction Voter Engagement Table for the #2020election We were awarded funding to pay community residents $20/hr for calling citizens around voter centers with historically low voter engagement to get out and vote in Harris County. We even were able to get them the tech needed to participate, like new Chromebooks and Hotspots! Some of us also got to meet rapper, Common, at the Mi Familia Vota and Univision polling pop-up! We’re doing our part to make voting history in Texas.
Señora Verónica is getting a new roof!! She has Señora Verónica is getting a new roof!! She has been a key member in our community group focused on drainage justice, Northeast Action Collective (@northeast_ac)

Residents are still in need of large repairs from the treacherous rains and hurricanes that our city has sustained. In the past 3 weeks, we have repaired 3 roofs, and have had one resident choose not to go with the Grant Land Office (GLO) because he was not confident they would be able to serve him or his family in the same way we could.

Your support is always so crucial, and you are not just supporting West Street, you are helping strength a growing network of residents in Northeast Houston that are determined to see equitable improvements and investments in their neighborhoods. #communityorganizing
